Visiting Brookhaven’s “Wings of the City” Exhibit
The Wings of the City mobile art exhibition has landed in Brookhaven, Georgia! The installations celebrate the diversity of Brookhaven’s citizens while also connecting the community through the common language of art.
The collection includes nine bronze sculptures by Mexican artist Jorge Marin, a leader in contemporary figurative art. His work has been shown in more than 300 exhibitions across North America, South America, Europe, and Asia.
Wings of the City gives voice to the Latin American community and provides a glimpse into Mexican culture. Marin uses his figurative art to bring awareness to issues of migration and freedom. The nine bronze pieces, located in key areas around the city of Brookhaven, incorporate elements such as wings, spheres, and the human body to symbolize balance, challenge, hope, compassion, and introspection. The statues are life-sized, gravity-defying, and capture both your attention and imagination.
You can find many of Marin’s sculptures around the Buford Highway Cultural Corridor, which is a vibrant hub for Brookhaven’s Latino community. Locations of the Wings of the City bronzes include: Blackburn Park, the Latin American Association, Oglethorpe University, and the Peachtree Creek Greenway. At the Mexican Consulate, site of the “Wings of Mexico” bronze, guests are invited to stand in front of the pair of wings – allowing them to become a part of the artwork, completing it. The statue symbolizes the universal dream of freedom, flying, and hope.
The Wings of the City bronzes were created in 2010 and have been traveling the world since 2013. The Brookhaven exhibition, organized by the Brookhaven Arts and Culture Commission, will be on display through April 2023.
