Dressing the Part: SCAD FASH Celebrates Costumer Sandy Powell
SCAD FASH’s latest exhibit, “Sandy Powell’s Dressing the Part: Costume Design for Film,” takes guests on a behind-the-scenes tour of Powell’s 40-plus years in the movie industry. This debut exhibit of her work features more than 70 costumes from 30 different films, such as Shakespeare in Love, Cinderella, The Wolf of Wall Street, The Favourite, Mary Poppins Returns, Velvet Goldmine, and The Young Victoria.
Sandy Powell is one of the most respected and sought-after costume designers in the filmmaking industry today. She has worked on more than 50 films, everything from period pieces to large-scale commercial projects. Her designs span genres and realities. Powell’s inventive and dynamic work has contributed to the creation of iconic characters and has led to frequent collaborations with directors such as Martin Scorsese and Todd Haynes as well as actors including Tilda Swinton, Julianne Moore, Cate Blanchett, and Leonardo DiCaprio.
For her achievements in costuming, Powell has earned three Academy Awards, three BAFTA awards, and a Costume Designers Guild Career Achievement Award. She also received the prestigious BAFTA Fellowship.

SCAD FASH Museum of Fashion + Film celebrates film as an immersive medium and fashion as both a universal language and conduit of identity. The museum, located on the SCAD Atlanta campus on Peachtree in Midtown, is both a showcase as well as a resource for students and those learning about the preservation of techniques and materials. “Sandy Powell’s Dressing the Part: Costume Design for Film” is on display now through March 16, 2025.
